Forklift Truck Training Program
In order to receive certification as a forklift driver, you need to undergo training on an industrial-powered forklift, or lift truck. The training should be specific to the forklift attachments and type which you would be using on the job. Training should also reflect the atmosphere wherein you would be working. Forklift safety must be a top priority for both the operator trainee and the trainer.
General Credentials
Anyone using a forklift should undergo training and certification before assuming operator duties. Basic credentials for using a forklift include an age of at least eighteen years and the physical capacity to control and operate the unit safely.
Pedestrian Safety
The top concern of any forklift operator must be the safety of pedestrians. Pedestrians in the vicinity of the forklift are at risk of death or injury from getting hit by the equipment or its attachments. Pedestrians should always have the right of way, and forklift operators should honk their horns when working near pedestrians or at crosswalks or intersections.
Weather Conditions
Forklift accidents often take place on loading docks. These areas become dangerous if rain leaks in through open dock doors making the floor really slippery. Wet floor conditions could lead to a hazard and operators should be aware of possible dangers when working in loading dock areas.
Certification
Forklift certification courses consist of a combination of classroom instruction and practical training tailored to the specific needs of the workplace. Training must be undertaken on the forklift type and attachments which will be used by the trainee in the workplace.
Accidents
On average, there is around one hundred deaths attributed to forklift mishaps, while over 100,000 are injured by forklifts. The majority of these accidents could be avoided with attention to safety and proper operator training.

Telescopic Forklifts
Telescopic forklift units are equipped with a pronged lift on an arm which extends over the top of the truck offering great height and versatility. The crane, or arm, is called a telescopic boom. The boom allows the operator to maintain a high degree of control while lifting the cargo to great heights. Regular forklifts could not move the cargo away from and towards the forklift cab, whereas a telescopic forklift could allow that movement. The telescopic forklift is commonly used in construction and agriculture. It is recommended for applications where greater control and lift is needed.
In cases requiring high volume carton handling, hydraulic attachments called forklift carton clamp attachments are better. The attachment has arm pads with four way reversible rubber linings which allow the operator to use uniform clamping force when picking up a load. It comes with a backrest which protects the loads from damage.
A sleep sheet forklift will often use a slip sheet attachment for storing systems that don't use pallets. The attachment clamps onto the slip sheet and pulls it onto the forks on the forklift. This kind of system is handy for overseas shipments and intra-corporate deliveries.
A man basket is a lift platform meant specially to hoist staff. The basket attaches to the forklift forks, held in with a strap or chain which is to be secured directly to the forklift carriage. The platform has railings to protect the personnel from falling to the ground. Brackets on the platform are used for fastening the worker's safety harness.
